Please can anyone give a name to this 'wasp'? It was digging/covering something in the soil in the garden (Warks). Many thanks.

well it is a Sphecid not a Eumenid. As Shane said you really need to examine these closely under the microscope to name the reliably.

On the balance of probability this is Argogorytes mystaceus but from this photo alone you CANNOT be certain so append ?
 
Many thanks to you both; it's an incredible world out there, and that's just as far as the garden gate!
