Advice needed please I have £250 to spend any help would be much appreciated.I been looking for a couple of weeks now I have to say"It's doing my head in".I would like makes and models so I can try them out. Please help a poor confused, bewildered birder. Cheers

I personally would dip into the second hand market with that budget...
You'll get far better with a used Opticron/Nikon/Kowa than a brand new one with that budget...
Keep your eye on the In Focus used list or similar (you'll then have the security of buying from a shop) or the used equipment here...

Agree with above about buying used. Also that will handily reduce your options if that is what is "doing your head in" |:d|
If you wish to share use of the scope with your wife, that might point towards looking for an angled scope. If your birding involves quite long walks across the moorland, you'll probably want a fairly light scope and tripod (which probably means giving up some magnification and brightness). Here's an example of how tiny a scope can be :

The ideal scenario would be to buy a complete kit with tripod (and stay-on case if you want one) since these can eat into the budget; a cheap-n-cheerful tripod is particularly likely to be a false economy.
