A rather lengthy report can be read here
http://www.bringnaturetolife.co.uk/land_now/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=1085

I feel that there is much more to Sri Lanka than I found. I totally underestimated the size of the island and the time it takes to travel. Having based myself north of Colombo it wasn't ideal for the known wildlife sites in the south. Not a lot of information was forthcoming about sites in the north but two trips that took in Dolphin watching from Kalpatyia and the Wilpattu NP had mixed results.
The wetlands of Anaivilundawa , just north of Chilaw were as good as it gets although it's really a lister's paradise rather than a photographers as the area covered is huge and a 'scope is needed to see the birds more clearly.
Will I return ?
Almost certainly, but having visited and made some contacts I will be going DIY next time !

You need to draw up your own itinerary and arrange your own vehicle and guide.
My trip report from a few days ago is here: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=149276&highlight=Serendip

You mean a few years ago Steve !
I read it before we went , part of the greater realisation that I had booked the wrong place to stay for three weeks.

One of these days I'll get to go somewhere BEFORE you do, but in the meantime keep those trip reports flowing. An invaluable source of info.
cheers Dave

Whoops!
How did I get that wrong?

If you ever fancy Kenya let me know as the photo-opportunities are amazing.

I did that one after your first visit too Steve but stayed in Malindi not Watamu.
Jonathan Baya, who you know , was our guide.

We've gone to different places in Kenya each of the last three school summer holidays and are going back again in July of this year. I have a friend who is a driver/guide who has his own 4x4 pop-up roof minibus. There is so much to see.

As an example spending two weeks between Nakuru, Naivasha, Nairobi NP and Tsavo east and West would yield a great bird list and lots of photo-opportunities without being too expensive. But you would want to go back for more! ;)

Hi Dave,
I'd love to read your report but I can't seem to get it from the link in your post.
Glad you enjoyed the Anniwilundwa wetlands. I loved it there when I visited in Dec 2009.
If you visit the North again I recommend "The Mudhouse" as a base. Great birding right on site. Sigiriya and the national parks close by, Minniyera and Kaudulla were great too, as is the Kandy area.
Best regards,
Mark

Dave, glad to hear that. You seem to have adapted to Canon well, some great birds in your report, love the roller. Hoping for one in Lesbos in 3 weeks!

Cheers

Phil
