It was interesting to see these open-dish hummingbird feeders at Finca Alejandria - "El Paraíso de los Colibries", at El 18, near Cali, Colombia March 29, 2015. They must be easy to clean and keep full for high-volume situations.

They'd be fine if you don't have bees in the area. Then there's the ant attraction after that.
It is fun to put some sugar water in a jar lid and hold it out where you normally hang your feeder. My Anna's and Rufous will land on the lid or my hand to drink the juice.
