which sparrow is more likely, CA USA?
last september, near the hetch hetchy resirvoir, i saw a pair of small, drab sparrows that i identified as brewer's sparrows. i am now unsure, and think that maybe they were first-winter chipping sparrows. can anyone shed some light on which is more common in that area?

Unless you are inthe SE corner of CA, go for the Chipper.

Brewer's breeds over large parts of eastern California and winters in the drier parts of southern California so it might very well be expected at Hetch Hetchy (which I have not yet visited). Do you have notes on/remember the head pattern?
