I'm afraid I can't get any closer than it's a member of the Ichneumonidae and, probably, in the genus Ichneumon . Parasitic Hymenoptera are one of the most difficult groups to identify, down to species level.

Chris

Thank you Chris, I have been looking in my insect books and now on Google and still have not got near!! I looked up Ichneumon and was informed that there are 110000 species!!!!

I don't think that any apologies are needed I am sure that you are right. I followed your link and the sawfly does look very much like the photograph I have posted. I think this one is a male.

Hymenoptera aren't my area but I would have thought this was a sawfly, maybe a Tenthredo species. For something similar see -

Apologies if I'm wrong

It is Tenthredo (Group B sensu Benson ) subgenus Tenthredella (Sheppard 2010). Possibly Tenthredo ferruginea, but unless you take specimen and carefully key it then you MUST add a big ? to any name applied.

btw it is a female, not livida which has bicoloured stigma. abdomen colour of little use in identification.
