Taiwan - Birding Reports (1 Viewer)

A long time since I updated anything here mainly due to the extreme heat we experienced in Taiwan this summer limiting my birding to almost zero.

On 10 September 2017, I joined the TWBS on their annual trip to Pengjia Islet and luckily the weather cooperated with calm seas and good visibility.

Highlights included Masked Booby (2), Swinhoe's Storm Petrel, Bulwer's Petrel, Brown Noddy, Aleutian Tern, Streaked Shearwater. On the island there were a number of good (but not rare) migrants to keep us occupied including Ruddy Kingfisher, Grey-streaked Flycatcher, Ashy Minivet and big numbers of Brown Shrikes. Others also saw and photographed an Ijima Leaf Warbler

Here's a few photos:
1. Bulwer's Petrel
2. Grey-streaked Flycatcher
3. White-throated Needletail
4. Streaked Shearwater
5. Masked Booby

A few migrants starting to show up now including Middendorff's Grasshopper-Warbler, Lanceolated Warbler and Pallas's Grasshopper-Warbler....of course all of these are tough to photograph.

Here's a few shots I did manage recently:

1. Olive-backed Sunbird in Taipei - likely an escapee;
2. Grey-tailed Tattler - Yehliu
3. Pallas's Grasshopper-Warbler - Tianliaoyang
4. Black Kite - Tianliaoyang
5. Black Drongo - Tianliaoyang

Some great birds showing up in Taiwan at the moment. Taiwan's first Red Crossbill was reported last week and we unusually had lots of Yellow-bellied Tits showing up in various places around the island.

1. Yellow-bellied Tit - Jinshan
