Just for helping others, could someone explain why this isn't a Black-capped Chickadee.

My one woman attempt to extract the superb tacit knowledge embedded in BF members and make it generally available. There is no post yet on BF to my knowledge that spells this one out :)

Range mostly. Here's a link to a good thread on distinguishing these two species:

Sorry, I couldn't get the hyperlink to work this AM. The post was from Lassa8 in April.

The Black-backed Chickadee and the Carolina Chickadee are very similar. They do have specific geographic locations which is a key to determining their identity. Their calls are different. This, of course, is not very helpful when viewing a photo. However there are some other more helpful characteristics to look for when viewing a bird. The Carolina Chickadee is smaller; has a "neater, more defined bib" and the wing is more a uniform gray color. The Black-capped Chickadee shows some white edging in the wings. Usually the flanks are lighter on the Carolinas and "more brownish" and less extensive on the Black-cappeds. This bird photo from Arizona could be either one, I suppose. It just strikes me as resembling a Carolina more than a Black-capped. I believe what influenced me most was the uniform gray of the wings.
