Gathering Trumpeters at Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary, along the Mississippi river in West Alton, Mo., now stands at 52, with unknown numbers dispersed nearby. Many dabbling ducks, with some mergansers in the fish holding water. Rafts of White Pelicans, and a few Horned Grebes also rolling through. A large murder of crows, perhaps 100 birds was entertaining. Woolybear caterpillars crossing roadways had the crows scrounging along the shoulders. Was mildly surprised to see maybe a half dozen Tree Swallows, foraging low over the river during an afternoon caddis hatch. Trumpeters are quite vocal on arriving, too windy for a good recording though.
