Two grasshoppers for ID seen in Portugal October. Can anyone put a name to them please? I thought the second one looked like a blue-winged but not sure.

I think you're right about the second one, John.
It's Oedipoda caerulescens. Lovely to watch.
I've just seen lots of them in Greece, and they're frequent
throughout southern Europe.
The first one is an amazing insect, really beautiful.....
it's really frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a good
guide to the insects of southern Europe - I have loads of
photos of unidentified grasshoppers.

Thank you for that David. I totally agree. However I have since had an identification on the first one as a male Heteracris littoralis. Mediterranean Splendid Grasshopper.
 
Sadly there is no English version. It is well worth getting though, even - if like me - your French isn't up to the text. I wish there was a guide to eastern Europe.
