Ditto to LBB. Neither is a full adult, as they both have black smudging on the bill near the red spot; I'd guess most likely 4th winter, but perhaps 5th winter.

Why are they confusing? Both seem straightforward LBB.

Like a lot of people....my eye is not totally ''in'' with large gull species incorporating L.graellsii and the associated ''variability'' of the mantle tone which more often than not can be 'influenced' by the ambient lighting.

Today was a particularly dull affair, you might say perfect conditions for a neutral result regarding the mantle colour, to my eye the bird in image 2. was somewhat paler, and here for me is where confusion reigned!

Thus why is it not YLG?....Too much streaking around the head, legs too short, it doesn't look particularly attenuated like the image supplied, if anything the reverse?

Still confused.....cheers
