Hatch Pond Swans

The swans at Hatch Pond have chosen an 'in your face' location to build their nest this year, to the right of the Bittern viewing area and about 30ft away. It will be interesting to see how they get on.

Still a lot around at Wyke today, on the way there a Barn Owl was hunting by the side of the road at about 09.30. At Wyke Down 1 SEO was hunting until 11am and a Male Hen Harrier was up hunting along the first fence line. The Great Grey Shrike was around all day. Up behind Down farm there was a single Grey Partridge and a flock of around 50 Golden Plover. In the afternoon 2 SEO came out from just before 2pm and a Barn Owl was hunting from 2.30.

Longham lakes today

Almost summer plumaged water pipit showed well on edge of big lake today, just after causeway on far side.
Also first wheatear of the year at site for me and 22 sand martins.
Unprecedented numbers of meadow pipits - at least 70 in one flock, but maybe twice that number as they appeared to be on both sides of lake and might have been two flocks!
Very cold
Mallard with nine babies too.
Chris

Still a good number of Chiffchaff on PC World Drain and 14 Sand Martin. 4 Wheatear still on the edge of Holes Bay.

Morden Bog

Marsh Harrier this morning for about half an hour ranging over bog and Decoy pond area. 1 single female Crossbill, circa 15 Chiffchaff throughout and 2 Sand Martin over MPL.

At Reap Lane the 2 Little Ringed Plover and Dunlin were still around the flooded fields. There was also a mixed flock of Redwing and Fieldfare and a male Black Redstart

Hi Mike , I am no expert on Portland , I only go a few times a year, but for the inexperienced I would just head for the main Portland Bill Car park , from here you can head to the tip of the bill, and then work back around the many fields. There will no doubt be plenty of birders around on Sunday(unless weather is very poor) so you can check out where they are headed.

I am sure there are more experienced Portland birders who may have better info.

Ian

Sand Martins

There were 9 Sand Martins hawking at the end of the PC World drain this afternoon. For the 1st time today they were also resting up between feeding giving an opportunity for some photos.:t:
