bit of a revelation to me to see him putting on the bright colours first on the hummingbird (cheek, throat, flank) then shadows over the top

maybe that's normal doing in watercolour?
 
Great link, thanks! I agree on the hummer, though - it had to be a trained bird. ;) Ours never sit still for more than about ten seconds, or so it seems anyway.
