Bird ID from an old diary? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I've recently found an old journal by my grandfather when he was on holiday in Tanzania in the 1960s (Masasi on the southern border). He gives a verbal description of a bird that he saw - I wondered if anyone might know what it was? I'm assuming its a common bird...

"Bird: calling ······ like a wood-pecker but higher pitch, longer continued. Tuft on head: warm brown cheeks, yellow breast, black over neck."

All the best
Rich
