Goldfinch? Southern California (1 Viewer)

This little bird, about the size of a goldfinch, would not give me a view of its front. It dove into the bushes and I thought I saw another partner that was yellow and black in color. I was thinking Lesser Goldfinch, but it does not look like any other picture (lack of yellowish green on the top) of goldfinch that I have.

I would say Lesser Goldfinch (I don't know what else it could be), but a particularly ratty looking specimen.

I agree with Lesser. I'm not sure it is a valid field mark, but the bill looks larger than both Lawrences and American. I just googled pictures for all three and it looked to me like Lesser's consistently had a larger bill, similar to this bird.
