Birding is a hearing based activity, not binoculars based. (1 Viewer)

Yesterday, I was watching Ken Burn's new documentary series on the Roosevelts (TR, Eleanor, and FDR). Great series, lots of interesting factoids I didn't know about the three of them, Eleanor in particular. Anyway, in one episode, FDR takes a brief vacation from his job as commander-in-chief during WWII to do some birdwatching. He spotted 108 species, 32 by ear. His Uncle Teddy was a birdwatcher, too.

Didn't Teddy have notoriously bad eye sight? I wonder what kind of binocular he used? Would a Galilean binocular have been a good choice for him?
