Hybrid Brambling x Chaffinch?? (E Romania) (1 Viewer)

Today in Ultima Frontiera, Danube delta, I photographed this bird: looks a chaffinch, but with completely brick red head and orange wingbar. Strange mutation or hybrid with brambling?

It could just be a chaffinch with either erythrism or hypoeumelanic leucism/schizochroism. Perhaps the former as there is red pigment being added to areas previously white, which does not occur with any strain of schizo or leucism.
 
Yes, definitely a pure Chaffinch. Hybrids are extremely rare in the the wild, and even for two such closely related species the different habitat, distribution, song and courtship behaviour are enough to prevent 'whoopsies'.......

Agree with the above posts about pigmental anomalies being the answer here.
