A friend photographed this in a Buddhist temple in Thailand- I assume it is Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis) or another one from this group?
Is that correct?


But why then this eye colour? Shouldn´t an adult show a reddish iris? And shouldn´t a juvenile show a different plumage?
So what age would this be (if it is indeed Greater Coucal)?

Can't say this is the angle I'm used to identifying them from! I was just trying to learn lesser and greater by looking at the mantle - but this pic won't do that. However, it does look like Greater Coucal juveniles tend to be darker, so seems that is more likely. I guess that your friend's bird is just a stage further along (darker) than this one?

Many thanks, also found this immature which has a redder iris but fits plumagewise very well- so Greater Coucal it is...
