Nikon D810 (1 Viewer)

Finally picked up a D810 on Saturday with a MB-D12 and the 24/1.4 afs lens.
Love the feel of the camera and it's nice and quiet. Reminds me of the D3s/D3 in the hand with the battery pack on.
AF seems fast and accurate and I like the Group AF. I haven't tried it on birds yet though.
Video seems much improved too.

Video was shot with the T1 storm signal up so some vibration.
Tested 24/1.4 afs,50/1.8D,Zeiss 28/2.0,70-200/2.8 afs vr and 18-105/3.5-5.6G

Good to hear Neil. Look forward to see what you do with it re the birds.

Very nice shots, Neil!

Despite my early comments, I did wind up selling my D800E and stepping up to a D810. All in all, I think it's a nice improvement to what was already a very good camera. The shutter is much quieter, the subtly revised grip makes for a better hold on the camera (in my opinion, at least), and the AF system does seem to lock a bit faster and hold focus better for BIF. Battery life also is also significantly better, although my particular D800E seemed to be a huge energy hog for some reason. Everything else - including image quality - is much the same as with the D800E. For me, upgrading was definitely not financially prudent, but I do enjoy the improvements!

Here are some D810 bird photos of my backyard feeder denizens and Western Gulls in San Francisco. The Dark-Eyed Junco shot was taken with the 500mm f/4 AF-S II; the rest were taken with the new 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR AF-S. High ISO performance is pretty respectable; the Mourning Dove shot was ISO 3600.

I'm happy now. The D810 is not quite the D3s or D4s for birds in flight but it's a lot better than the D800. Also impressive is the lack of noise in the hide. When I used to fire up the D800 people would give me dirty looks , now they won't know I'm there.
The AF seems to be good. I tried the Group mode , 51 points and 21 points. I think I like the 51 points the best after my first morning out.
With the Battery Pack MD 12 on it balanced nicely with the Nikon 500/4 afs vr lens. I mostly shot in DX Crop Mode today as no birds were too close to the hide (distance 25 - 80 meters).
Here are a few from today.

Does this review show the D810 to be slightly worse than it's predecessor for picture quality from the charts?

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/ca...igital-slrs-hybrids/nikon-d810-1254883/review

I usually rely on DxoMark for the test results -
http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Niko...00-versus-Nikon-D800E-Outstanding-performance
Their conclusion reassures me
"While the D800 models’ performance remains excellent against rivals, due to improvements in the sensor design over the past two-years and the adoption of the EXPEED 4 processor, the gains made by the Nikon D810 are impressive."

As I'm not doing much landscape work with the D810 I'm not likely to notice small improvements in quality but I do notice improvements in AF performance and Video.
If you look at the middle photo of the Chinese Pond Heron flying straight at me the D810 nailed it but the D800 would not have. It still didn't lock on as much as my D3s would have though but I still need more experience of the various focus modes.

Not that keen on DxoMark, but for some reason Jessops (UK photo store) dropped the D810 price by nearly £400 (5,000 HK$)today.

Edit; Not sure why but the price has dropped again today to £2,279 big change from £2,699 earlier this week.

The D810 is now cheaper than what the D800E was locally…. it could be dSLR producers are struggling with the influx of cheap mirrorless cameras.
The D750 body is advertised for more than a Fuji X-T1 with 28-200m equivalent zoom plus flash.
I realise its a comparison of apples and oranges…..but to many its a deal clincher.

I had to travel fast and light on Thursday morning to get to the hide as close to 6.30am as possible ( a 2.5 km hike) so I took the 300/4 afs with the D810 and the TC 14E 11. Perfect light early ( for here) and some of the shorebirds came close (12 - 20 metres). The Red-necked Stints would have benefited from the 500/4 but Tereks and larger were ok, with some Cropping.
Here are a few.

Neil,

Great images.

I would be interested to know how much of a crop these images were from the original, I have the same lens & TC and wondering how the D810 compares to my V3. Getting to within 20-30m of waders here can be tricky, so I will be cropping quite heavily without a longer lens.

Thanks

Kevin

Kevin,
I was shooting with the 1.4x and 1.2 Crop Mode on so equivalent to 500 mm. With the V3 should be roughly the same when you factor in the megs. I would like to use my V2 all the time but it's not as good for fast action flight shots as I need. Much lighter to carry though.
We only had two windows open in the hide and there were only two of us trying not to move too much. I usually sit a bit back from the window so that the lens is recessed about a foot so as not to be as obvious. If I'm the only one there ( usually only in the summer) I hang some camouflage material over half the window.
Neil.

This AF of the D810 has been upgraded to the D4s standard Expeed 4 Processing Engine. This photo is the last in a sequence of 31 frames that I shot yesterday. I had 21 AF Points selected. They were not all in focus but this was probably due to my lack of technique because every time I moved off the bird and came back it re-acquired focus. Over half were in focus.

My preferred combo is the Nikon 300/4 afs on the D810 with the Nikon TC 14E teleconverter. I have it sitting on the bench next to me in the hide and can grap it quickly when action happens. The improved AF means that I can get on the subject fast.
I had two Canon Shooters with 800/5.6 lenses on pro bodies sitting next to me when the Purple Heron flew by. They didn't get off a shot.

The light in Southern California was very good despite the temps up in the 90's. The AF of the D810 did a good job and even made the 300/4 afs look as good as the 300/2.8.

Back out to the mudflats yesterday with some light rain early when I left home at 5.15 am but bright by the time I got to the hide around 6.45 am. But more haze than my previous visit. I was mainly shooting with the D810 on the 500/4 afs vr and the GH4 100-300mm , SX60HS for video.
I wish I could have these combos with me at all times but the carrying on my back on the floating boardwalk for about 1.5 kms round trip is a strain.
The last photo was taken with the Canon SX60 showing the shooting postion.
