Hi Max you need to be on the Egleton section of the lake it is 19 miles without the peninsular if you count in the peninsular it is 26 miles around the lake I have cycled it if you go to www.rutlandwater.u-net.com all the info is there by the way if you are thinking of stopping over there the hotels are very expensive hope this helps. Hi Max,

I wrote a report for the Disabled Birders Association giving visiting advice and some other locations on the reservoir - the dam and the burley fish ponds
follow the link
http://www.disabledbirdersassociation.co.uk/reserves/midlands_rutland.htm

some extra advice: allow a whole day to get your money's worth!!
if you go to this link that shows the map of the reserve
http://www.rutlandwater.u-net.com/rw/RW_Visiting2.htm#Hides
when going to the Egleton reserve you start of at the Visitor Centre (Hide 7 on map) If you are going all day you can split the visit in 2, because of the direction of the sun start by doing the circuit that goes from hide 8 to 13 and back ( you can extend it by going over Lax Hill to hides 14 + 15 and then path back to 9) allow 3 hours at least. In the afternoon go the other way through to hide 2 (fantastic on Sunday I had 2 Osprey, 2 Buzzard, 3 Hobby, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk all in the same sky, I had no idea where to look first!!! ;) )

The Lyndon reserve is good to do if you have plenty of time .

but try also Eyebrook reservoir:
my review

in any case check out the Leic and Rutland Ornithological soc website for latest sightings and maps:

I hope this helps

Nat
