Probably Just Herring Gulls?, Dundee, Scotland,, February 2014 (1 Viewer)

Stonefaction

Dundee Birding....(target 150 in 2024).
Scotland
Recently we had an interesting mixture of gulls arrive at a small city pond here in Dundee, Scotland. In addition to an Iceland Gull and Mediterranean Gull, we had at least 3 Black Headed Gulls ringed in Norway. Trying to photograph these birds meant a few prolonged visits to the pond, and to pass the quieter spells I had a look through the Herring Gulls present, not really knowing quite what I was looking for - except for birds that looked "different". I suspect that these will all be 'normal' Herring Gulls (argenteus) but I would like some of the gull experts to have a look please, just in case.

In no way a "gull expert." All sets of photos show what I think are 2nd and 3rd winter herring gulls (argentatus) Grey mantle visible. I'm sure Lou will be along soon with the definitive answer.
Cheers,
Jono

Thanks, both.
In some ways I'm glad I was correct, but I'd like to find one that wasn't 'just a Herring Gull', so I suppose I'll just have to keep looking (though not entirely sure quite what I'm looking for - despite looking at the books/photos/websites very little seems to 'stick' in my brain, and not getting any real-life exotic herring-type gulls to practice on isn't helping either. I shall persevere though.....eventually I hope there will be a 'eureka' moment when it all makes sense).
