Hamburg, Germany in November? (1 Viewer)

I will be spending about a week in and around Hamburg, Germany late in November and would like any information on good birding areas within a reasonable drive of the area. I have never birded in Europe before, so everything will be new, but I have not been able to find any guides to this area and I would like to focus on productive areas. Thanks for any help!

Jill,

First of all have a look at this site. A bit thin at the moment but we're working on it.

Fat Birder Hamburg

and the neighbouring ones of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

If you can afford a whole day perhaps it's not too late for the Wallnau reserve. Migration will be over but the wintering birds will be there. And almost anywhere on the Baltic or North Sae coasts will be worth a visit.

Have a look here as well Birdingpal Germany . Either T (Thomas?) Herfurth in Hamburg itself or Chris Engelhardt (v. good birder) if he's not off touring and even Klaus Guenther from the WWF Husum is not too far away and knows Schleswig Holstein well.

If you have no success come back to me and I'll put a request out on the German BirdNet. That often turns something up.

David, thank you so much for the links, they look like they will be very helpful! I only wish I had more than a year of German in school, because about all I remember is "Ich spreche kein deutsche" at this point...I guess I'd better get a phrase book that includes "Where are the birds?" 3:)

Once I have nailed down when we'll be there, I will try to contact the Birding Pals suggested. Thank you again!

Hi,

even I lived in Hamburg, I do not know this area for birdwatching.
Well known is an island Helgoland
http://www.oag-helgoland.de/sprachen/english/indexe.htm

Until middle of november is still migration time.
In this time willcome also swans from east e.g. Whooper Swans.

There are different spots there are interesting for waders on north sea and Baltic sea.
North sea

There are several guides and books about the birds of Hamburg available, mostly on German. Take a look at this:
http://www.ornithologie-hamburg.de/html/ioc_dog.htm
There are some information made for the last IOC in august this year. They made also a book this year about the birds of Hamburg in English language. You may order this by mail to:
[email protected]
There was also a birding trip program made for the IOC (http://www.i-o-c.org/) which contains most of interesting birding sides around Hamburg.

Some interesting areas are here:

My own suggestions for november are these:

1. Winsener Marsch / Staustufe Geesthacht
2. Wedeler Marsch
3. Holzhafen

The River Elbe is interesting almost everywhere. Lots of waterfowls.

Good birding

Steve

Thank you all so much! This is very helpful and I think we're going to have a great trip. My husband says he knows how to order a beer after a tough day chasing the birds, so who could ask for anything more?

Eagle Owls in Hamburg

I've just come back from Hamburg, although only minimal birding. If your interested I can give you an easy site to get very good views of Eagle Owls in Hamburg itself (would prefer not do so publically on this forum though, for obvious reasons).
