Wader day

Great day Tom. Congrats for the Avocet and Dowitchers. Both great birds. I was very envious of your Jap Quail photo earlier on. I must have seen well over 150 of them but I have never been able to get a shot.
Your Chinese Egrets look marvellous. I haven't seen one in breeding plumage yet down here in Guangdong.
Talk soon.
Brian.
Paul Holt and I left Jinshitan at 4:30 am and slowly made our way to Zhuanghe, stopping wherever there were birds to see along the way. I think we arrived and had lunch at Zhuanghe right around noon. Zhuanghe is a little under two hours drive from Jinshitan without stopping. Near the end of the day the tide pushed numerous flagged Bar-tailed Godwits and 2 Great Knots close towards us. In all, we were able to see over 20 tags but many were just out of reach and they left because of the rising tide just before they came into view. We were able to read several at another site where we found a high tide roost but the majority weren't able to be seen clear enough. We did record colours, position on the legs, and other details that will make the researchers (in Australia) very happy. Attached is a photo of a very visible one.

Two lifers for me were 3 Pied Avocets (not too many pass this way) and 2 Asian Dowitchers (thanks to Paul). The dowitchers were too far for photos but clearly seen with good scope views while they were feeding among a large group of Bar-tailed Godwit. I should add that, being in summer plumage, they were very similar in colour to the Godwits.

An absolutely fantastic full day of shorebirding with one of the world's best!

Grey-faced Buzzard - 2 Funny story - we stopped because our driver thought he saw something in a tree. We stopped to check and it ended up being nothing, but right at that moment two flew directly over us. Must have been a movement of them but we had shorebirds to look at. It's only the 2nd record for me close to Jinshitan. (flocks of them at Laotieshan in autumn).

Jinshitan Reservoir May 7, 2012

Have been taking it surprisingly easy over the last few days considering that migration is in full swing. I had all of last week off work and we spent a lot of that time sitting on the nice beaches here. My kids are so happy to get outside. The weather completely changed last Monday. I went from 3 layers to shorts in 12 hours.......We haven't look back with temperatures in the low to mid 20s for the last week now.

I also don't have that much motivation to go check out shorebirds after seeing almost every Asian species with Paul last week! No, I would still do it but today I opted for forest migrants and successfully negotiated my way into the large reservoir behind some mountains here in Jinshitan. This is the place that I was upset about in one of my very first posts about being barred from entry. I somehow managed to smile nice at the guards and let them look at almost everything through my binoculars for around 5 minutes before they told me to go in quickly and disappear! This location is a fraction of what it used to be but was still fun to check out again.

Taiga Flycatcher - 1 (FOS)

Ooh, nice hobby shot, and very handsome Asian Brown (though I had to cheat to make sure it wasn't a female Taiga). Another "creature" is louder than the Radde's I think - as my player got it.

Country Club May 8, 2012

The big passerine push is on! The Country Club was out of control today. I was asked to leave because the staff there was closing the gate for the day. Because of this I didn't get to cover more of the open areas. Construction nearby also keeps the main water channel and surrounding areas completely void of birds.

Appreciate you putting all the bird shots up Tom. I use these to test myself (still doing poorly for the moment but repeated exposure will help) !

Me too! I actually got the warblers, buntings and thrushes right - given the choices from the list :-O The robins I had hardly ever even seen a picture of before. The chestnut bunting is a real beauty.

Sea-farming Ponds May 9, 2012

The madness continues with many migrants in the area at the moment. Paul Holt and Terry Townshend are at a place called Donggang which is near Dandong on the N. Korean border. From what I hear, they are swarmed with birds as well. I think the cold weather stayed extra long this spring and suddenly the flood gates are open. I was out before and after work today. I covered the mudflats in the morning and the wetlands in the afternoon.

another day of full flow passage - Yellow-rumped Flycatcher is one of my favourite birds - plus a fine lifer and patch ticks. All its needs to be perfect is a Dollarbird or two!

Cheers
Mike

LOL! Still you have named the photo as Sharp-tailed sandpiper ignoring the prantincole! I'm going crazy as i havent seen one so far this spring.

Good Luck Tom! Envy your rubythroat :-(

Dev, nice one in catching that! I smiled as I labelled the photo......

Mike, Dollarbirds will be a few weeks yet. It's unusual to see one here before June. I know a place where, if they are here, they will be and there's no sign of them yet.

Have been getting text messages from Terry Townshend today. He is with Paul Holt and Bai from Dandong and rarieties include:

Little Stint
Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike!!!
over 15 Nordmann's Greenshank
Marsh Grassbird
more Asian Dowitchers
etc...

Sea Farming Ponds May 11, 2012

Did a quick stop at the mudflats on the way but spent much of my time trying to get decent shots of the Asian House and Sand Martins. My camera struggled in dark foggy weather. It was cold again today as well - grabbed my winter coat before heading out.
