Shorebirds flying with Mallards, Ontario, Canada (1 Viewer)

Today a flock of about 20 Mallards flee over. I then noticed three much smaller birds with them that were shorebirds rather than ducks. Is that normal? Anyways these shorebirds had black or dark chests and were white below that. Any idea what my options on ID are?

A good option in the northern parts of North America this time of year are Dunlin. We often see lots of them on Lake Michigan in the later part of October.
