ID Me: Turtle (Pleasanton, CA, USA) (1 Viewer)

I'm guessing a Red-Eared Slider since they are known to inhabit this particular waterway, but wanted confirmation because I can't make-out the red head stripe.

We also think that is moss growing on the shell...is that the case? (Might explain why some of the Sliders have white shells...dead moss.)

THANKS!

Hi,

I don't think it's a Red-eared Slider. They have a clear stripey pattern on the throat, rather than the mottled pattern shown on the picture. Also the red patch is very obvious. It could possibly be a Map Turtle species or even an introduced or escaped exotic species. We have released/introduced Red-eared Terrapin and Common Snapping-turtle in the wild in the UK.

Cheers.

I agree with fugl, and you might want to linger over your looks at these in the wild, as they are in steep decline and may soon be declared a federally endangered species.
