An interesting (even to Mr Binks ;)) report of a female of "the-duck-that-dare-not-speak-its-name" in the south west marsh in early July; no date in the log book but written between entries dated the 5th and 9th.

SAILING POOL
30 Mallard, 1 Canada Goose, 1 Moorhen, 7 Coot, GC Grebe - 2 adults + 3 juveniles

FLASHES
17 Green Sandpiper, 3 (possibly 4) Common Sandpiper, 1 Dunlin, 19 Curlew, Oystercatcher - 2 adults + 1 juvenile (can now fly), Avocet - 6 adults + 9 young, 10 Lapwing, 10 Snipe (7 in the rear "gulley", 3 in the delta), 8 Shoveler, c15 Teal,5 Shelduck, 95 Mallard, 23 Coot, 18 Moorhen, juvenile Little Grebe, 17 Greylag Geese over, juvenile Pied Wagtail, Sparrowhawk, c500 BH Gul by 9pm, juvenile Med Gull picked up at 8:50pm (looked a duskier bird than that observed at the Moors earlier although the light was considerably different), Little Egret over at 8:35pm (appeared to fly out of the rear of the sewage works rather than the Moors Pool so maybe a fifth bird?), female Tufted Duck with 2+ young on the third Flash.
I left Craig to hang on until darkness; I am sure he will report anything further of note.

A Greenshank reported earlier in the afternoon from the Flashes.

A ringed adult BH Gull - white 2K44 - was in the Flashes roost tonight; code sounds familiar so will trawl through my records.

A very impressive total of 75 species were noted across the reserve on Saturday.

The Black-headed Gull sporting the white leg ring with black code "2K44" on its right leg which was present in the roost tonight had previously been recorded at Upton Warren on the 27th July 2009, 5th August 2009, 16th July 2011 and 23rd July 2011. This bird originated from the Cotswold Water Park ringing scheme and further details of its movements have been requested.

Dave J reports 2 Dunlin, 13 Green Sandpipers and 4 Common Sandpipers at the Flashes and 3 Little Egrets at the Moors Pool.

Late one today: 5pm till 9.40pm

MOORS:
Little Egret 2, GCG + at least 2 chicks on the back of female. Little grebe chicks in NE corner and plenty of calling, c10 adults and juvs along the west side.
With the surrounding crop fields now being harvested, there is a build up of waterfowl. At least 200 mallard, 120 canadas and 20 greylag roosted on the pool between at least feeding bouts - this number will increase over the coming weeks. Tufted c35 + 10 broods of young at least. Coot 140+, Lapwing 5, common tern 6 ads, 3 juvs + 2 chicks, unfortunately one of them has jumped out of its raft. Hopefully it will seek refuge on 'pool island'. A stream of large gulls were moving south, but only a few dropped on to the pool.
A few warblers called along the east track including - blackcap, reed warbler, cettis, and a few chiffchaffs.

Little Grebe juv 1st Flash, Teal 19, shoveler 4, shelduck 6 juvs - in two groups of 4 and 2. mallard 130 with birds arriving as I was leaving.

Were both Meds juveniles John?

Yes mate John R had already found the bird that has been around for a couple of weeks. The other bird was a darker more uniform one could have been the bird Craig had found. Although its ear coverts were darker. It might be worth asking Mike if the two he saw were these birds.

I tried to take a couple of shots of the ones I saw on Thursday - neither bird came out well.

One bird had a paler bill-base (brownish-red, or possibly reddish-brown ;)) and an obvious white tertial on the left side. The other was a little darker, seemed a little more bulky and had a wholly black bill.

Sounds like the 2nd bird you describe Mike. the first you describe sounds like the bird first seen a couple of weeks ago, that 'white tertial' sounds familiar ;)
