Birds not interested in Coconut anymore? (1 Viewer)

We put out all the usual stuff - sunflower hearts, mixed seeds, niger seeds, peanuts, apple, cheese & bread - but thought we might try the odd coconut. Birds don't seem interested anymore. Is it because there is too much choice?

I recently hung half a coconut in the garden but no birds came near it. Eventually took it down and binned it as it had gone mouldy.

I didn't even realized that birds liked to eat coconut. thanks for the idea!

If you do put coconut out only every use fresh coconut NOT desiccated as this can swell up inside the birds stomachs.

I had the same last year, tried half coconuts at three different times of year, no takers. Try cheese Gromit ;)

There's probably more nutritious stuff around for them - if you're providing higher-calorie stuff then they'll go for that instead. Also, hardly anyone puts coconut out anymore so the birds may have simply 'forgotten' that it's a suitable food - they might not recognise it as such if it's been so long since they've seen one that any birds that would have known have since died.

I have found that sultanas are a firm favourite on my bird table. Funny how fussy they are and they seem to go through phases of eating particular things.
Sue.

The birds that come into our garden eventually pecked it when we put it on the ground and off the hangers, during winter.
