Hi:

A friend take this photo in our birding trip to California in November. The photo was taken about 100 metres. from the Big Bear Lake (San Bernardino Mountains). Looking at the Sibley it looks like a Gilded Flicker but I think the habitat is not the correct for the bird¡. We don´t know very much about the distribution and habitats of the species of California so.. what do you think? could be an hybrid Northern Flicker?

Regards from Spain¡

Looks good for Gilded Flicker to me. What color was the underwing/tail?

PS. You'd get a much better response on this if you put it in the Bird Identification Q & A forum.

Orange, I see, not yellow, which makes it a Northern Flicker/Gilded Flicker hybrid or intergrade, not a pure Gilded.
