It is well known that birds can be killed or injured when they fly into windows. In North America, volunteers have been patrolling twenty cities during the spring and autumn migrations to document the number of casualties. It seems that local birds learn where they can fly safely but migratory birds have a problem identifying glass. Flying by night to avoid predators and to use the stars to navigate, it seems they get confused by the illumination of towns and cities below.
The volunteers are calling for architects and landlords to make their buildings more bird friendly to reduce the number of deaths. The collisions are most common in cities where there are many big glass buildings. Using less glass in buildings and turning off lights at night could help to reduce the collisions.
