Where in the world am I? Bird Game! (1 Viewer)

With such great numbers of cranes (in migration, I presume?) I figure The Falcon has got it right, it's got to be Japan (well, unless it is Korea ;-) )

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about birding hotspots in Japan. Looking at a map, though, I would guess Kyushu is the most likely island.

The Falcon got the country right -- Japan. +1 pt

Peter C. got the right island -- Kyushu. +3 pts

The checklist was made at the Izumi Crane Preserve in Kyushu, Japan. 80% of the population of Hooded Cranes winter here (the other 20% winter at sites in South Korea and coastal China).

In the right region, but not quite. Notice all the frigatebirds and small island specialists (Nicobar Pigeon). That will hopefully help...

Carlos-

This is a really interesting game! Very educational ... I had heard of the Nicobar Pigeon, though never been anywhere they occur. I had no idea they had this specialized distribution.

Going by that hint - and also the fact that Singapore is in the general vicinity - I will guess the Siliman Islands, Thailand.

The answer is Mantanani Island right off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia's section of Borneo. It is famous for its large roost of frigatebirds, Tabon Scrubfowl and Nicobar Pigeons, and the endemic Mantanani Scops-Owl. No points for anyone that round!

You nailed it Larry Lade, and just a couple minutes ahead of Reuven_M. Six points!

Hard to juggle difficulty level. Some seem a bit too hard and others, like this one, got answered within a few minutes.
