sacred ibis near bologna, italy (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I spotted a group of about 10 sacred ibis, whilst I was taking a train from Bologna to Verona. There were standing in a large open field of grass; there was a house quite nearby so I wondered if they might be captive birds (although there was no fence around them)?

Any ideas if wild (i.e. non captive) sacred ibis are spotted in this area? I know that they can be observed in various areas of the Emilia Romagna region, but I didn't think that they could be seen so close to Bologna and Verona.

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul

yes, wild Sacred Ibises do occur in that area, their stronghold is in NW Italy but they some birds seem to move closer to the Adriatic coast in winter. There have been recent reports from Modena province which is between Bologna and Verona.

Actually that's very near where I would have seen them. Is it surprising to have seen that many birds, or is it generally single birds? Is it very likely they're wild? Thanks
