Barrow Hills SSSI
(For location see http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=3328)
Took a short trip out across the county border, to visit Barrow Hills, near Harwell.
Weather was cold but calm and mostly sunny, and the bird activity was "good in parts" as they say.
Part of the area is a conifer plantation, which can be a bit sterile at times, but there are plenty of deciduous trees around to attract the woodland birdies. Plus, most of the locals have feeders out, which means you can cheat a bit by looking into their garden trees!
We did a reasonable circuit of the site, but did not go down the green lane, keeping instead to the wooded areas.
Best sighting? Goldcrests 15 feet away.
Birds as follows (includes journey). Year ticks in bold.
Buzzard
Blackbird
Mistle Thrush
House Sparrow
Woodpigeon
Coal tit
Blue Tit
Greenfinch
Great Tit
Goldcrest
Great Spotted Woodpecker
Long-tailed Tit
Chaffinch
Treecreeper
Wren
Jay
Robin
Collared Dove
Magpie
Carrion Crow
Rook
Pheasant
Lapwing
Starling
Black-headed Gull
