Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China (1 Viewer)

Spooner Lime 01 was seen in South Korea. Before this,we only know it uses Rudong every autumn.
Spooner X8(head-started in 2014) returned to Rudong from Zhanjiang, with lots of br plumage and should be ready to go to Russia to breed in its 3cy.

Good to know that our friend X8 has started on the journey and should be in a condition to breed. Hopefully we can look for it again in Guangdong next winter.

Recently no luck to find more flagged ones, although a few adults in full br plumage in Rudong.
Will hear some news from South Korea side.

BTW,the Nordmann's Greenshank with PTT from Thailand left Jiangsu and flew to North Korea and then to the breeding ground in Russia.
Meanwhile, hunting season in Russia is open now. Some waders and geese banded in China with satellite tags were shot!

on 21 June I saw X8 again.
This time it moved a little north to Dongtai but not to the breeding ground.I still has extensive br plumage but it seems that it lost one leg.
Let's hope it was just hiding that leg and still healthy and may try to breed next year.Or with one leg,it's very difficult to make the way to breed.
Together there were at least five, probably all 2cy birds. Two have flags from head-start project. One Lime flag not read. The other White flag X7 was head-started last year.

Six is a very good number showing probably more 2cy birds choose to oversummer in the Yellow Sea region or even further north.

More head-started birds seen in Dongtai.
X8,again with one leg feeding.
One with a pink ring on left tarsus but no flag.It has quite a lot of br plumage and is just starting to drop the inner four primaries. It staged in Dongtai-Rudong with X8 last autumn and wintered with X8 in Fucheng, and returned to the breeding ground this year.
X8 had lost much of its breeding plumage from June,so it for sure stayed in Dongtai the whole summer, not back to breeding ground, probably due to one leg lost.

One Spoon-billed Sandpiper in Hengsha island of Shanghai on 28th August. It was feeding along with 6 Red-necked Phalaropes. The individual was in non-breeding plumage and no flags.

after this spring, again the summer survey is going on and there are more than 10 in early June in Dongtai, incl. adults and 1-summers.
Interesting that adults leave so late.
Last year from late June to early July only 1-summers stayed. So we will see what's our survey result in late June this year.
