Suggestions for garden tree / shrub (1 Viewer)

Have been working hard this year on tidying up the garden - not easy being complete non-gardeners! Have a spot where we want to put a tree, and the main criterion is that it should be good for birds, and ideally other wildlife.

The place is
- Heavy clay soil
- Facing South / South-East
- Would like something which can be kept to 3m in height or so
- Can be managed to not spread too much
- Evergreen ideally
- Nice flowers for bees, and berries which birds like.

We had looked at cotoneaster lacteus, but the berries seem not preferred by birds. It was nice as seemed like a small tree (long trunk, then branches and berries at top), which was ideal for the position which is behind a small arbor.

If anyone has a suggestion of what might be good, would be much appreciated. The garden has blackbirds, GSW, tits, finches (gold, bull, green), siskin and redpoll in winter, and have had crossbill and redwing in the past.

I'm not much of a gardener so not sure whether it would suit or not, but Amelanchier berries are very popular with the birds, particularly blackcaps and bullfinches, and the flowers are great for bees. Not evergreen though.
