Anyone any experience (or hearsay) of just bowling up at the lake, without organising a visit in advance, and sorting out a boat on the day to look for the grebe? I'm presuming that when we are in Peru (Sep to end Nov) they'll be far out in the lake (?).

Also any useful additional tips on identifying them, cf Silvery, other than size and bill-length?

Showing up and trying to just organize a boat isn't really possible. I figured that'd be the case back in 2010 and was very surprised to find no way to get out on the lake. Ended up dipping the bird. Returned in 2015 and coordinated a trip out on the lake with local guide Cesar. He's easy to reach on Facebook and is the only way to get out on the lake. Search "Cesar Donato Zevallos Bashualdo" on Facebook.

And if you thought that it's strange Cesar almost never smiles on pictures, I can assure you that in real life, he is a very friendly guy smiling all the time!

Great, because I've facebooked him (in English), but had no response yet. Anyone got an email address for him?
