Birdguides new system (1 Viewer)

I'm involved in systems development and when launching something new people always want to hark back to what they know, irrespective of whether it was actually better or not. Take some time to play around with the functionality and you'll figure it out, presumably in the same way you figured the old functionality out.

Himalaya's post (No13) says it all for me. It might be new and fresh but it does not do the job I want it to do, simple as that. I am all for change ....... so change it back !

I wouldn't want to change it back. I want them to make it look better and work better. Just making it look a bit more modern, at the expense of functionality, is not really what good web design is about.

Oh, and it doesn't matter how old you are! Perhaps if the majority of your customers are middle aged men, you should design your website to cater to that clientele

Nice to see I am not the only Luddite here.
Some very good points made that need to be assessed by the new designers. We don't want pretty we want the simple functional, user friendly style of the old Forum.
If it ain't bust don't fix it!!!

I don't suppose this is the right place to post this but what is the general consensus on the new Birdguides set up.
Personally I really don't like it, It is not as easy to see what is about without having to scroll through lots of info.
The car club I belong to opted to go to a similar format as this new one but had to revert to a system similar to their old one because the new one was so user unfriendly and members gave up using it!!

Bloody hell, but it's clunky.

They won't be getting a renewed sub from me. I jacked a few years ago, but their site was user-friendly. This one is a mess.

I bailed out of Birdguides a few years ago, but I've since signed on to RBA. I use RBA for detail, but I still clicked on to Birdguides for general info, because their site was so easy and logical. Well designed in fact.

It looks as if they've 'improved' it so that RBA seems the simpler and more logical site, even though RBA is still clunky. It'll save me clicking onto BG in future.

Massive own goal.

Also whats very annoying is that for some reason can't log on to it on chrome (firefox is fine) hopefully a temporary glitch.

My Birdguides subscription expired 2 years ago. I only went on it because the list of sightings was easy on the eye.
For those here that subscribe, were you asked your views about the new format or has it just happened?
If I was a subscriber I'd be wanting my money back. The new format (even with the free 30 day trial) is horrid!!

I know I have to give it time, but I don't like it. I don't go on there to have large tho nice photos nor adverts smashed into my view - I simply want sightings with detail - that is what I have paid for, for over ten years.

Its also much harder to read on my phone, and inconveniently you have to scroll down a lot to find the sightings. The script is less obvious and clear visually on a small mobile phone screen.

So not user friendly, I just want a large screen with sightings, nothing else.

I may look at switching services come renewal time. Of course I may like it by then, but sorry this is a backward development for me, and an unwanted one.

It's not just appearances. The search function has significantly less functionality. Searching by month was very useful, but that has gone.
The web designers are just thinking about impressing a future employer with a magazine like web page, and are uninterested in user experience.

In addition I used to be able to search for 'warbler' to pick up all birds with that term, but now that has been banned.
And the filter has to be turned on every time i want to use it.

How dare they change the look of something I've never paid for!
As a non-subscriber, I'll now cancel my non-subscription and rely on BF (which I also don't pay for).

But seriously - I get the fact that the look isn't to everyone's taste - for me it's because it screams commercial interest. As a left-winger with strong green tendencies, I prefer my birding to reflect my politics, so the fewer the links to rampant capitalism the better. The planet's being destroyed by the mega-greed of multinational commercialism, which is exactly what this new site seems to promote.
