American Pipit? - USA, California, Monterey (1 Viewer)

Well-known member
Hi,

Last winter (14th Jan) I saw this bird on the coast at Monterey in California.

My best guess is American Pipit. However, it seems to have a little yellow on its flank, and I don't see this in pics of American Pipit, so I am a little doubtful.

I'd be very grateful for any ID help

Thanks

Ed

Certainly a Yellow-rumped Warbler, I am not sure I would call it as the Myrtle form from this picture. Myrtles usually show more of an eyeline than does this bird.

No hint of yellow on the throat, so I thought not Audubon's.

In my experience winter Audubon's and Myrtles can both have quite dull throats. The pale throat extending around toward the nape (contrasting with the auriculars) and presence of a small eyeline are better marks for Myrtle, but many birds, perhaps this one, can't be reliably called as Myrtle or Audubon's.
