Alex's New World adventure (1 Viewer)

With bird 10, I tried to enlarge the photo and got the impression of a Grackle style bill. Does Great-tailed Grackle go down far enough or is there another one similar?

Re 11, I would agree that it could be Turkey V or one of the yellow-billed Vs, but can Zone-tailed Hawk be completely excluded (the wing might be just a little too broad)?

9, 12, I think Andrew has it.

Niels

Thanks Niels

I hope alll you contributors' patience doesn't wear thin. Alex & Chazz are intending to keep going until about next July. I'm actually quite impressed that they're showing an interest and I'm looking forward to them starting to see some mammals. There's one just after

Bird 13

http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blo...997/filename=22_ba---way-too-many-to-name.jpg

a parrot from Buenos Aires - the photo is from their travel blog rather than our website, because they haven't downloaded it yet. Click next for a different view, then there's a terrapin and a rodent. They're hoping it will turn out to be a Capybara but I've a sneaking feeling they're in for a disappointment :)

Bird 15 - I think this might be a Burrowing Owl

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36432

Bird 16 - I wondered if this might be a Bellbird sp. Perhaps not.

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36436

The next few images give a little more detail.

Bird 17 looks tricky

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36456

Bird 18 I expect is a Woodcreeper sp. Quite a lot of pics of this one, both before and after but this looks like the pick.

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36480

Bird 19 - no idea, but I'm pleased that they're bothering with species that aren't immediately glamorous.

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36490

Bird 20 - a kestrel? Too long-tailed for American Kestrel (I have seen exactly one)?

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36506

Bird 21 - I wondered if this might be White Woodpecker

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36512

Bird 22 - I'll stick my neck out and say Black Skimmer

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36530

And last one tonight, a rather over-exposed Bird 23 - probably a heron.

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36568

All above at Laguna Blanca, Paraguay.

Bird 14 looks like a Myiarchus flycatcher of some sort, but those are hard to separate even with good pictures.

Point taken. As far as I know, neither Alex nor Chazz have ever tried to photograph wildlife, Andrew, so I'm delighted at the results so far. Makes the ID challenge a bit greater - I'm pleased that they're going for multiple images in the hope of getting one decent one - it pays off sometimes.

I'm sort of drawn to Brown Crested out of the 3 Paraguayan species, but can't see any evidence wing bars. Might need the original to get a better idea - some time next year, if he decides to come back to the UK.

the rodent looks like a wild cavy (guinea pig), probably Cavia aperea I guess

Bird 15: Burrowing Owl - funny to see one in a tree
Bird 16: Is a Jay, probably Plush-crested again.
Bird 17: Could be a Firewood Gatherer.
Bird 18: Narrow-billed Woodcreeper
Bird 19: Don't know
Bird 20: Hard to tell, but could be American Kestrel
Bird 21: White Woodpecker
Bird 22: Black Skimmer and Southern Lapwing
Bird 23: Probably Whistling Heron

Argentinian birds

Bird 24 - a flight shot of a flock, but to my mind quite distinctive so there are probably 5 species all similar :)

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36676

These were in/near the Reserva Natural Quebrada de las Conchas

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36742

which looks rather nice.

Bird 25 - another Whistling Heron?

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36860

Bird 26 - large raptor

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36876

Bird 27 - Julie has IDed this one as Blue-crowned Trogon

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36902

Bird 28 - several photos (click next) of a vulture? Black or Turkey? I think they're all the same bird.

http://avengerpenguins.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=36914

These were all in the same area of Argentina as the Reserva above but obviously a moister area - cloud forest?

That's the lot so far. I think the lads were at Iguazu yesterday (through the medium of Skype they showed me nighttime views across the Brazilian and Argentine borders from Ciudad del Este on Sunday night and they were hoping to see some more wildlife around there.

I don't think Bird 25 is a Whistling Heron. It actually looks a bit like a Pinnated Bittern, which would be a good bird to see. Hard to be sure though. Not sure about the Trogon either.

There's another photo of the heron/bittern if you hit the 'previous' link. I don't think it will add much more, though, but perhaps worth a look.

What don't you like about the trogon, Andrew? There are six images altogether (via 'previous' and 'next'). I think the lads worked out that this was something a bit different because Alex pointed out that the bird looked much bluer in real life than in the photo. I don't have any references to check against any confusion species.
