I recently photographed this large snail ( shell approx 30mm dia ) on the North Downs in Surrey and would appreciate if anyone has any idea as to its actual ID.

Many Thanks

Looks like Helix pomatia Linnaeus, 1758 (Roman Snail), habitat and location right (just possibly a very bleached and pale Helix aspersa Muller, 1774 (Garden or Common Snail), but as you describe it as large i assume it was noticeably bigger than aspersa)

The rather shallower sutures, making the whorls seem less 'bulging' / flatter, the coarse growth lines and the rather fine striations, along with the somewhat faint, continuous stripes without patterning and the very pale body rule out Cornu ( Helix ) aspersa Common Garden Snail. IMO.
