A Week in Yorkshire
Just returned from a week in Yorkshire, so cue all the rarities flooding into Spurn!!! Despite a lack of rarities had some good birds, Wryneck, Long-billed Dowitcher, Little Stint, Little Gull, Arctic Skua, Manx Shearwater, Osprey, Black Redstart, Tree Sparrow, Garden Warbler and Willow Tit (one of which was a bit leucistic) amongst them, due to the wind and a better half that’s not keen on seawatching only spent one day at Spurn,
However, Yorkshire has some fine reserves we visited, Potteric Carr, Fairburn Ings, Blacktoft Sands, North Cave Wetlands and the highlight for me Bempton Cliffs where the views of Gannets are breath taking!!! I’ve gone easy on the Gannet pics showing great restraint considering I took over 1200!!!
Add to this a non-birding day in the historic, if pricey, city of York and post birding visits to Beverley, Pontefract and Whitby (has any place on earth got more Fish&Chip shops per square foot) I’d say we packed a fair bit into our week!! I’ve also discovered Yorkshire Curd Tart (delicious) and my accent by the end was so authentic several people couldn’t understand a word I said!!!! 😊
Thanks to my other half Margie for once again happily going along with my plans and only insisting on a couple of cultural trips, which I managed to get through ok! (with a few cakes and a lot of Chocolate!!)
Thanks to Louise Martin for renting us the lovely Bay Tree Cottage which is just up the road from North Cave Wetlands, very cosy and warm!

I’ve added a few pics here (there’s not that many Gannets honest!!)
