The competition theme for August 2005 is 'Birds in Flight/Flock of Birds'.

From the 68 entries submitted 30 have been selected to be added to the voting booth. The remaining entries were moved to their respective geographical forum.

Despite fewer entries than in some of the recent competitions this was the hardest to whittle down to 30 for the voting booth. I identified 42 first rate photographs all with merit for a place in the final selection. 30 were randomly chosen from those 42. Many very good entries were unlucky not to make the cut.

Please select your favourite entry and cast your vote.

The booth will remain open for the next seven days after which the winner will be announced.

The entries can be viewed as -

1. Slideshow
2. Thumbnails in order of the voting booth
3. Thumbnails alaphatbetically

Best of luck everyone :t:

I understand your trouble in picking the final 30...this is without doubt the most difficult one yet!

some absolutely fantastic shots!!!!!

hard to vote for any one in particular, but ended with me voting for the bird I would most like to see Great Grey Owl. Sorry to all the others.

I understand the trouble in narrowing the pictures down, but it does seem a shame for the other twelve photographers. Could they not all go on? A lot of really good entries, well done all.

We used to post all entries to the voting booth, but there were too many to view properly come voting time - voting was too spread and the number of votes fell.

It's not just a question of the other twelve, just about every entry was worth including in some way.

If anything 30 is still too many but it's a compromise.

I have been trying to look at the last 30, but the gallery has been closed for maintenance for the last hour.
Will it be reopened tonight?

Unfortunately there was no advance notice of the closure from Admin. If it's going to be down for long the date the poll closes will be extended.

I too have been in and out checking the situation and am disappointed that it is closed. Hope that you have all your work complete soon, eager to see the shortlisted photos.

Rin

I did not make the last 30 with my Short Eared Owl..very disappointed, however, I would like to vote for one of the excellent remaining images but cannot access the photos in the gallery.

Will it be opened today?

Fantastic shots evryone! They are absolutly superb!
It was very tricky picking but I decided to vote for one of the Australian entrants...
I really hope I'll get to see the birds I voted for ;).

Thanks for excellent shots,
Dimitris

Oh my, these photos are all too good to choose between! Congratulations to all the entries for super shots. My thanks to those who take the time to do a complete job on filling out the info, esp. common name, scientific name in right format, full location and habitat, as well as something about the circumstances or the situation when you took the photo. That was quite tough, but finally looks like I have picked the winner! May be too early to tell though! My favorites normally don't even come close to winning!

Good luck to everyone in the competition, all the shots are awesome!

Wonderful. This really was a hard competition to judge but in the end I plumped for what I thought was technically a very good picture, as well as being extremely pleasing to look at.

Again, well done everyone. I'm full of admiration.

As usuall - excellent photos and very hard to choose only one.
I usually loook for the one that makes me go :"Wow" when i see it for the first time, and photos that i know are hard to catch.
This time there were 2 such photos and i finally chose one.

STARLINGS...... GETS MY VOTE!!
whilst all the other photographs are wonderful and beautiful -especially the great grey owl and whooper swans - this is special it has depicted and utilized the topic of birds in flight in a way that no other photographer has in this comp .... it shows how birds in flight are not always singular and rely on number in order to survive and this is a spectacular thing to observe. This picture is also wonderful in the way it captures the birds in an aesthetic disc.... this photo is what photography is about, a decisive moment in time, a shape , a flock of birds, that form something else ... this pic stands out , all the others are similar , this is different and shows thought, and fits the title best ..... best of luck, and thanks for such a brilliant picture
