Hi

We've hired a boat to cruise the northern broads around Stalham, Potter Heigham, Hickling Broad, Barton Broad, Ranworth Broad etc.

What are we likely to see from the boat and from walking along the banks? Also any tips on where to go?

Finally, is there a reasonable chance of spotting a Bittern if we're up early around Hickling?

Thanks for any help you can give

You are likely to see Marsh Harrier, Kingfisher and Barn Owl whilst out and about. Ospreys have been seen in the Ranworth area - it might be worth mooring on the Bure around TG346160 and follwing a bit of boardwalk south to Cockshoot Broad, which is a nice quiet spot.

In the Hickling area you should hear, and possibly see the Cranes. Bitterns are present, but you'll need a bit of luck to see one. The 'back' part of Hickling has a scrape called Rush Hills that attracts waders and passage birds, so if you have access to news services you might want to keep an eye out for reports from there.

Enjoy your visit.
