May 9th Really surprised to see a Green Hairstreak in our suburban garden near the airport despite no gorse etc nearby. Anyone else had similar sightings?

Green hairstreak

Does anyone know any reliable sites for Green Hairstreaks? Preferably in the Norwich area, but wider Norfolk would be OK. Have tried Mousehold with no success.

There were several being seen on the woodland walk at Weeting Heath earlier in the month, I think it was the last bank holiday when we saw one. We were told at the visitor centre that there were plenty around.

Sorry can't help with the Norwich area.

Sparham Pools near Lyng has a colony. Have seen them both in the dell area by the car park and at the back of the main pool in the gorse bushes.

Assuming there has been more sunshine inland than near the coast does anyone know if Swallowtails are still on the wing at Strumpshaw Fen please.

Saw 2 on Thursday, both near the visitor centre, despite it being rather cloudy and cool.
Best of luck if you go,
Thomas

22/6 Two Swallowtails seen at Hickling Reserve.
24/6 At East Ruston Common, 100 plus Silver Studded Blues and at least a dozen Small Heaths. Also saw 4 Ringlets, one Large Skipper, 1 Tortoiseshell, and a few Meadow Browns. Also saw an Emperor Dragonfly.

Are butterfly numbers up for this year despite the desperately prolonged arctic conditions earlier? No doubt this heatwave is beneficial to some species but are overall numbers up? I haven't seen many Large Whites but a Wall Brown a fortnight ago was a surprise visitor to the garden.

It's very mixed - those species that over-winter as eggs are doing fairly well, those that hibernate as adults seem to have got hammered by the cold. Having said that, several rare species have had a brilliant year (Heath Fritillary, Purple Emperor for two) If we now get a drought though, then caterpillars will suffer as food plants wilt, so we may see effects next year on species feeding now. The heatwave of 76 was followed by a disastrous 77 for many species.
