These are the current 'Breeding Raft' numbers for 2016, but these latest figures are likely to improve, with a second count for the 2016 breeding season now imminent.........

346 Common Tern nests, which collectively hold 919 eggs.

347 Black Headed Gull nests, which collectively hold 631 eggs.

2 Mute Swan, 2 Moorhen ( + 2 juvs ), 16 Mallard, 4 Coot ( + 3 juvs ), 18 Tufted Duck, 2 Little Grebe ( + 2 juvs ), 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Oystercatcher, and 1 Water Rail, were on, and around the pools.

2 Cetti's Warbler, were again heard singing from their traditional breeding areas on site, but unfortunately, I personally don't understand ringing terminology, but after talking to the guys on site this morning, I believe, that if they can eventually manage to ring some chicks that are known as 'pullus', or 1J, then this should clinch further breeding records for the site.

No sign of the White Winged Black Tern, between 05.00am and 10.00am this morning, but I was very much expecting that to be the case, to be honest, because the bird was being constantly harassed by Common Tern's during the entirety of it's stay yesterday.

3 Little Grebe, 17 Tufted Duck, 2 Moorhen, 4 Mute Swan, 18 Mallard, 16 Canada Goose, and 4 Coot, were on the pools, with 40+ Swift, 4 Sand Martin, 4 Swallow, and 2 House Martin hawking over, and also 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Grey Heron, and 35+ Lapwing, seen around the margins.

1 Cetti's Warbler was heard.

3 Grey Wagtail, and 2 Mistle Thrush, passed through.

1 Peregrine ( juv ) chased, but failed to catch an Oystercatcher.

Looks like it's moved up to Martin Mere, so well done on connecting with such a short stayer!

Thanks very much.......

I 'flew' out of work yesterday, as soon as I received the news, that it was at the steelworks, and I enjoyed some great views at times,.......it's just a shame, that I never saw the bird perched at any point, but the Common Tern's were merciless in their pursuit of it.

Shotton Steelworks

We saw the White winged Black tern at 12.00 hrs yesterday, hawking over the Ash pool at DNS. It stayed for 15 mins and then flew towards the Steel works. We were able to relocate it at the Tern colony at 13.30 hrs flying over the rafts pursued by Common Terns.

After hearing, what was only a very brief 'snatch' of what we thought was a 'possible' Spotted Crake yesterday, another visit on site this morning, revealed the bird to be calling non stop on this occasion, from the reed beds adjacent to the tern colony, from approximately 05.30am until around 06.20am........which has now enabled a very confident, and conclusive ID of Spotted Crake.

14 Mallard, 1 Oystercatcher, 3 Little Grebe, 3 Mute Swan, 6 Coot, 3 Moorhen, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 18 Tufted Duck, 3 Shelduck, and 2 Redshank, were on the pools, with 43 Lapwing feeding on the drier surrounds, and 50+ Swift, 8 Swallow, 2 House Martin, and 2 Sand Martin hawking over.

800+ Common Tern, and 800+ Black Headed Gull were on the 'rafts'.
