Falmouth Birding (1 Viewer)

Gorrangorras, Penryn River high tide c.6:30pm

Redshank 22
Greenshank 5

Pendennis Point, Falmouth
this evening -seawatch 6:50 -7:50pm, all west

Manx Shearwater 238
Balearic Shearwater 3
Fulmar 3
Kittiwake 1
Auk sp. 5
Med Gull 1

Finally some Balearics! 2 pale, 1 dark bird. No shearwaters were close, but a bit of late sunshine helped.

Other interesting news - WILSON'S STORM PETREL reported from Falmouth on the 22nd on Birdguides! At a guess, assuming this is genuine, from a boat? Be interesting to learn more ...

At sea, indeed, nice photo on CBWPS website.

Gorrangorras, Penryn River high tide c.7:30pm

Redshank 22
Greenshank 2
Whimbrel 1
Dunlin 1

(Minimum numbers, as a moored boat obscured part of the shoreline adjacent to where the birds roosting)

Peregrine circling over Treverva

Seawatch from Pendennis Point, 6:25 - 7:25am, all west

Manx Shearwater 75
Balearic Shearwater 2
Sandwich Tern 3
Med Gull 7

Also a few Fulmar, plenty of Gannets moving west, Rock Pipit etc.

Swanpool had Reed Warblers, Blackcaps, Little Grebe etc, with 1 Curlew at Gyllyngvase.

Went out again yesterday evening 7:30 -8:15pm

Bright sunlight, WSW winds, fresh.

Manx Shearwaters passing west in numbers (100's per hour) in small or medium flocks and individually, at all distances although most at long range. 1 Balearic, and an unidentified brown and white upperpart marked bird flying with a Manxie. 1 presumed Great Shearwater west at c.8pm - distant but bright white underparts contrasting with varied grey and brown upperparts. Straight winged (no bending at the carpals), and active shearing - continual arcs with brief flapping between. Came out from behind St Anthony's head and tracked halfway across the bay before being lost probably either to rest on the sea or fly out to sea, but always moving further away.

Plenty of Gannets, as over the last few days, all age ranges (including the odd 2nd year bird being noted on previous days).

Apologies for the suppression, taken this long to hoof the girlfriend off the computer.

Out again to Pendennis on the way to get some milk for half an hour fro 7pm - Manxies past at the rate of 500/hr, Gannets and gulls, including 1 Med Gull.

Interesting to see Manxies flying beyond the Manacles- over 6 miles away, although admittedly this was only possible because their underparts caught the sun as they banked ...

Gorrnagorras between tides - c.20 each Curlew and Redshank, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Greenshank

Song Thrush?

Hi all,
I took the attached photo of what I thought was a song thrush but looking at the photo I'm not sure now. It did appear to be larger than I would have expected. Is the white circle by its beak a marking or a parasite?

From one of my lecturers, just thought I'd relay the news "8 sooty shearwaters, 20 common scoters and about 150 manxies in just over an hour from Pendennis pt this afternoon."

Interesting! Managed an hour this morning ... 7 Med Gulls in a flock and c.80 Manxies west. Unfortunately got family visiting but will try and escape again if I get the chance (unlikely though) ... shame, this looks like the windiest day for a little while ...

Out for an hour (3:10 - 4:10) this afternoon, hoping to pick up a tail end of passage, probably a bit on the late side though. Heat haze and birds being distant didn't help. Wind probably a light westerly at this stage. All west

Manx (type, could have been balearics in there) Shearwater 52
Common Scoter 5
Sandwich Tern 1

White butterfly sp. over the sea by St Anthony's Head c.1 mile distant! (and continuing west into the bay).

House Martin and a few Swallows over the point.

were these birds sighted at your usual Pendennis Head?

Yes, Pendennis Point (think it's just an alternative name).

The obvious seawatching spot in Falmouth (apart from Pennance/Start Point which is less accessible), although birds can be seen from anywhere along the seafront, will be a bit more distant, but a few shelters may get used eg near Gyllyngvase in certain conditions, but Pendennis is the default spot.
