Official. It's OK to kill 94 protected birds per year.

According to Ed Davey

The report reads - ...... Mr Davey argued that the wind farms should be allowed to go ahead if less than 94 birds are killed per annum.

It is predicted Race Bank, that will be 96 turbines, could kill 43 birds every year and Dudgeon, that will be 85 turbines, 28. Already Sheringham Shoal, a wind farm in the area that has been approved and Tritum Knoll, that is under consideration, could kill 22 of sandwich terns per annum.

It's rather ambiguous whether this means 96 birds of all species or 96 Sandwich Terns. I'd assume it means the former unless they're designing some very clever tubines! What exactly is going to happen if the turbines kill 97 birds? There no chance that they'll close the wind farm down is there? That'd be one expensive bird! What if it's 120 birds? 150? 300?

Who will be doing the counting of the corpses, John?

How can they hope to find them?

My guess is that the official number of birds killed will be 'nil', on the basis that no dead birds were found.

The truth will be somewhat different.

This comes as no surprise, a number of EIA I have read have said that it's ok to kill x amount of Red Kite, Peregrine, Goshawk, Honey Buzzards etc as it will only amount to x percent of the population. Try advertising the fact that you are going to kill these birds by other means and see where that gets you. It is a scandal in which RSPB and all the other supposedly conservation minded organisations show their true colours, once they take government cash they are expected to tow the line

Wind farms have the potential to be the final nail in the coffin for a number of species since the government appears to think that no where is sacred when it comes to their installation:(
