50 backyard hummers in 4 hours, PHX 08/2012 (1 Viewer)

I made a census of my backyard hummers a couple of weeks ago. I was a bit surprised by the number of individuals. Here are 8 AHY male Anna's.

This next series of female Anna's is a bit subjective, I did not match tail shots with each of these, so really not certain. There were a total of 7 with one being a bit blurry so I did not include it.

And again not definitive with tail shots, these are the remainder of the Anna's, 12 in all. Once all 50 birds are posted I will discuss some of the individuals.

I was most pleased to get my first AHY male Rufous Hummingbird this year. There were 4 individual Rufous. I was also happy to upgrade my AHY male tail shot.

In review of my work I think one of my female Anna's is in fact a BCHU (#5 counting from the top, left to right).

I am also not certain about bird #6 in the second BCHU matrix.

I would be very interested in any other ID concerns. I am colorblind, so it will get past me.

2014 census at 80

I did another census this past August and increased the count to 80 individuals over 2 4 hour sessions on back to back days. Here are 78 of the 80.

31 Rufous

25 Anna's

24 Black-chinned

Rufous Hummingbird

In 7 years of looking, this is the first time I have seen a Rufous Hummingbird from my patio in the spring.

Wow that's amazing! Here on the east coast we only have one species, the ruby throated hummingbird. I am setting up its feeder soon, I'll post any sightings!

Another hummer census on July 20, 2016 got the following:

95 Anna's (29 AHYM, 31 HYM, 35 F)
15 Black-chinned (1 AHYM, 14 other)
03 Rufous (1 AHYM, 2 HYM)
113 in total

I am using the postocular spot which is as unique as your fingerprint.
The AHYM Anna's are attached.

I simply can't imagine seeing that many hummers in one day. I'm lucky if I see a half dozen.
