Went out yesterday evening after work for a few hours birding around Pennington Flash and Astley Moss, SW of Manchester. Didn't really expect to see much but ended up with a pretty good list and a few new birds for 2005. At Pennington I saw a gorgeous male Garganey and the first Common Tern of the year, as well as more usual birds. Apparently they had an Osprey pass over half an hour before I arrived! Typical. I also heard my first cuckoos calling on Astley Moss- I think this is my earliest record so far- and saw 2 Litttle Owls. Here's a list of what I can remember seeing
