Black Witch Moth
A couple of days ago my wife, Brenda, noticed that there was a huge moth clinging to the screen door on our patio. It was one I had never seen before. I took a photo of it and measured its wing span, 5 inches. Apparently, it is unusual for this species to be found in Missouri, but there are records of it going as far north as Canada.
Anyway, it was an interesting sighting for me! Photo on "flickr" here

Hi Larry
Yes, that's a Black Witch, Ascalapha odorata (Linnaeus, 1758), a male. There have even been a few records of this species on this side of the 'pond', the origin of which may be disputed. Best wishes Martin |
