County Louth (formerly Dundalk Bay) local patch. (4 Viewers)

Hi Des, I went to see the scoter on Baltray beach itself on one of the higher spits. They were straight out middle distance the time I was there. About half the flock broke off and flew in a southerly direction towards Gormanston.

regards Gerard.

Serious amount of fires(both fields and vegetation piles)in farmers fields this evening in Drogheda area. I thought this practise was illegal under the habitats directive?

Hi Squidge

Farmers can burn for agricultural purposes (only), but if they burn open areas in an uncontrolled way, this is arson and the fire brigade should be called. The habitats directive covers SACs so if its not an SAC the directive doesn't apply.

I saw my first Swifts (about 5) yesterday evening over Buttercrane Shopping Centre around 7.30pm and I also saw my first Swallows flying low over Clanrye River about one week past.

Baltray Little Terns badly needs Volunteers to help out with wardening duties. The colony is nearly a Kilometer long so needs as many bodies as possible.
If you can help out ring Amelie on 0862434874.

Regards Gerard.

Reed warblers breeding at two sites in Co Louth, Liscarrage bog and Balmers bog - as far as I am aware this is the first time breeding has been recorded - in 2012 I surveyed the Boyne, Ardee bog, Ballymascanlon and a few large reed bds mid county but never confirmed a reed warbler...though they were probably there all along....

Also this year has been great for cuckoos with two males and a female on one day at Rampark/Jenkinstown, another Windy gap and another Edentober...
